Project Environment:
Eggenburg is a small village with about 3.500 inhabitants, in the region of the "Waldviertel", a northern part of Austria. The next quite big city with a good infrastructure is Horn, which is about 10 km away. The next (really) big city, about 80 km away, is Vienna, the capital of Austria. From Eggenburg to Vienna there exists a very good railway-net.
The K-Haus is a catholic Youth Center of the diocese St. Pölten. The religion affilation is not important for the choice of the EVS.
EVS enriches the experiences of the young people in the local community. The EV has the possibility to come into contact with young employees and volunteers of the diocese and to attend regional activities.

Accommodation: A single room with ensuite bathroom in the guest section of the monastry (next to K-Haus).
Food: The breakfast and dinner will be in the Lehrlingsstiftung, at noon the volunteer has the opportunity to cook a meal or to buy something for lunch, which will be financially supported by the host organisation.

Language training: Private lessons or a course in the VHS linguistic school, advanced and intensive if needed.
Training and support: The mentor will meet regularly with the volunteer to check on his/her progress and help solve any problems. They will also ensure ongoing support for the volunteer. Volunteer will be given any training necessary for them to carry out their tasks, and the volunteer will be integrated in the staff meetings, will receive a daily support through the team
Efforts will be made to help the volunteer integrate into the local community.
Volunteers will attend the on-arrival training organised by the National Agency or host organisation as well as nationally organised mid-term meetings.

Youthpass
All participants in an approved project under the Youth in Action Programme have the right to receive recognition for their participation and learning which can be used in their future lives. The Youthpass Certificate is the instrument which has recently been developed for this purpose.

Proposed activities:

K-Haus :
The volunteer should participate in the different types of programme, team meatings, planning and preparation of events and he/she should take over self-responsibilty if possible. The working-field are very various and will be influenced by the interests of the volunteer.
So the different tasks are:
Team meeting, preparation and doing the advertisement of an event, updating the address lists on the computer, layout and content of a flyer for a youth event
Welcome for a youth group and introduction of the K-Haus to the youngsters and check of the house before the departure of the youth group
Keeping the homepage updated and putting in the pictures of the last youth event.
Support for young people when they are in the internet room in the K-Haus
Preparation of different youth activities (content and organisation) in sport, culture, creative and education
Meeting and networking with youth workers of different youth houses in the region

The working will always be done and discussed in team, and be done by those who have interests and abilities in the different fields; and working differs always a little bit between group work and taking over of some self responsibility

Lehrlingsstiftung:
Concerning the "Lehrlingsstiftung"-project the volunteer should participate in 1 or 2 evening-sessions of the "Wohnprojekt", which means preparing the evening meal with the apprentices, joining the organization of the evening (having a cinema-visit, film evenings, playing (card) games, playing street soccer, volleyball,…), guaranteeing the fixed bed-times (for the apprentices) and preparing the breakfast.
The volunteer is also involved in the "Lehrlingsstiftung" (connected to the K-Haus, where apprentices live) were he/she is in contact with 25 young people.

The task in the Lehrlingsstiftung starts at 4 p.m. with a meeting with the workmates about what happend during the day. During the "kitchen service" the EVS must follow and help the two guys charched to prepare the tables and to take the meal from the mean kitchen downstairs. The same guys must clean the room after eating.
Half an hour later there´s an everyday meeting with the guys. Here they can say how they want to spend their free time before going to bed. They can go shopping, meeting with some friends in Eggenburg, use Internet or watch tv. The boys of the civilian service and the EVS try to entertain them with different possibilities: table- tennis, table- football, billiards, carts, dance, box. But before their free activities all they need to take a shower. Somedays they have some task extra: clean the WC or the own room, for example. The EVS must always be there to control.
During the "night service" the EVS is responsable for the guys in the sleeping time. They have to be in bad at 10, and they can leave the room just to go to the toilette or to come to the EVS if there´s an emergency. After 10 the EVS controls that they are quite in their bed and that their mobile is out.
In the morning a guy is responsible for the breakfast. He/She has to be in the kitchen at 06.50 to finish preparing all what his mates need to have breakfast (another guy already prepared the table the night before).
After breakfast the EVS has to communicate to their tutors if something particular happened the day before.

Volunteer Profile:
- ability to work in a team
- good social skills
- no problem to work with young people, willing to work with young people (with various special needs e.g. learning needs, difficult family backgrounds)
- flexibility (adaptability to a wide range of tasks)

A volunteer candidate have to be, first of all, interested in making social service in Austria and has to be ready to face a difficult social adaptation in the country with cultural difficulties. The volunteers have to be ready to face close mentality of the local community.
The information about vacant EVS places of this project is situated on EVSWORKS web-site, the database in general , through different info channels and networks.

Actually candidates are presented to the hosting project and people there choose volunteers on following criteria:
- knowledge of European culture, traditions, etc., which can be useful in work with youngsters
- readiness to bring themselves into the organisation
- readiness to learn German and communication of Austrian Conversation
- skills and abilities to work in non-formal environment
- creative skills………

It is important that the volunteer expresses his/her real motivation on the topic of the project, and not just telling that he/she wants to go to Austria…we will check and cooperate close with the sending organisation to be sure, that the applicant fully understands the meaning of the project!
Furthermore the project and the future volunteer are getting in contact and discussion expectations and the project.
a) The EV never leads a project on his/her own alone.
b) The EV supports the members of the team. The EV doesn't need to have a finished school or a pedagogic education, whereas team members must have finished school and a pedagogic education.
c) The EV takes on responsibility for simpler tasks which they can do on their own. If they take on more difficult tasks, they get support from the team members, if needs be.
The EV is never left in charge of young people alone. There are always members of the team who support the EV with their learning and with their responsibilities and who are in charge of the youth.

Risk prevention
1) First of all, it's important to underline that the hosting organization always provide volunteers with risk prevention and crisis management training part inside the on-arrival training
2) The hosting organization provide EVS volunteers with mentors who can be real friend for volunteers and with whom volunteers will discuss any problems and questions they have. So the hosting organization has a possibility to know about all troubles from the start and can solve actual problems. Mentors also are responsible for providing volunteers with linguistic support during the first months of their staying in the project, so volunteers and the hosting project prevented from misunderstanding of the language problems
3) The EV is not exposed to any unreasonable risks during his/her EVS.
Problems and difficulties with the young people will not be resolved by the EV, but have to be reported to the youth leaders, who will decide on any consequences and next steps to be taken.
If there are activities with a relatively high risk on the schedule (e.g. skiing, climbing in a climbing park) it is up to the EV whether they take part in the activities or not. The EV has to decide for them selves if his/her physical condition is adequate for physically demanding activities.
Should an accident occur the EV will be given first aid or be taken to the doctor. Should there be a more serious illness or accident (e.g. broken bones) the EV will be immediately taken to the nearest hospital. Susanne Rosmann from the organisation 4Yougend will be contacted immediately and informed about the circumstances. Whether the parents are informed is the decision of Susanne Rosmann.
