Title: Experiencing Active Citizenship in Rural Areas 2 Location: Bustuchin. Gorj County. Romania Duration: 9 Months
SUMMARY
Experiencing Active Citizenship in Rural Areas 2 is going to bring together 10 volunteers from Europe for a period of 9 months, starting with 15th January 2011.
The project aim is threefold:
* increasing volunteers social and personal development * Community development and Increased participation of Young People * Partnership development - encouraging local and international cooperation.
Experiencing Active Citizenship in Rural Area II is the second group EVS project initiated and developed by Euro House Bustuchin being a follow up of the current EVS project. The positive impact and encouraging outcomes that resulted so far from the implementation of the EVS project in Bustuchin, Rosia de Amaradia and Hurezani communities determined us to consider the necessity and opportunity to continue with the implementation of such projects. In this respect, the proposed project EACRA II will gather together for a period of 9 months, 10 European Volunteers from 6 countries: Austria, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Armenia and Georgia. The hosting placements for this project will concentrate in a single cluster – Bustuchin – Hurezani – Rosia, three communities that are geographically close and are being confonted with similar problems.
The project aims to further develop and consolidate the innitiatiatives launched by the Experiencing Active Citizenship in Rural Area project in the direction of increasing active participation of local people in general and youngsters’ in particular to community activities that will focus on environment protection and cultural awareness.
The project encourages the participation of youngsters with less opportunities as well as involve a large target group of youngsters confronted with majour socio-economic issues.
Among the working methods that are to be used during the project we mention: meetings, open discussions, games, lectures and presentations, campings, expositions, dances, etc
Methodology:
The first month – is dedicated to the cultural and technical accommodation of the volunteers, training and coaching:
The first weeks upon arrival all volunteers will undergo a capacity building programme –part 1. The programme will focus on volunteers skills development in terms of project management and non formal education methods. Furthermore, technical information regarding accommodation, food, working methods, financial aspects , etc will be clearly explained.
The second 2 weeks will be dedicated to the Community discovery, volunteers will go in the localities that will be hosted and where they will implement the activities. There will be meetings with the authorities( school, city-hall), meet the locals, the youngsters that participated in the activities implemented by the former volunteers, meet the places from where to buy food and other things that the volunteer will need.
The volunteer will have a big support from the mentor from that community, a person that will help him as well in activities but in accommodating to the life of the locality as well.
The next week all volunteers will undergo for the second part of capacity building programme. The program will include as well Language Awareness (Intensive Romanian Language Classes), that will continue in the hosting locality.
The remaining 8 months will focus on personal and community development, during which the volunteers will get actively involved in developing non formal educational activities with the youngsters from Bustuchin and the neigh-bouring communities.
Objectives:
* Stimulate the intercultural learning process and enhance the European Awareness and Active Participation within the hosting community * Provide the context and the opportunities for all volunteers to develop both personally as well as socially by acquiring and improving new skills and competences as well as boost their self‐ confidence. * Contribute to the community development by boosting the participation and active involvement of young people in their local communities. *
Encourage the participation of youngsters with fewer opportunities * Widen and strengthen the partnership and co‐operation relation in between all project promoters
Volunteer’s Tasks
*
Attend all preparation, evaluation, planning and thematic meetings *
Attend all language classes, participate in the class , learn and prepare accordingly. *
prepare themselves for each meeting with the requested materials (for example: filling on time the monthly evaluation forms) *
prepare and develop non formal educational activities (sport activities, dances, singing, art , theatre, civic activities, environmental actions, etc) with youngsters from the hosting community *
be open minded and develop innitiatives in the communities *
Openly communicate with the mentor, the local community facilitator, his/her peer volunteers and the EVS coordinator *
Be responsible and meet one’s tasks accordingly.
Activities
The project activities will focus on non formal educational activities developed with the youngsters from the hosting communities both in an organized environment (schools) as well as in the community at large.
Example of activities:
* Green Activities (Cleaning Areas, Planting trees, etc) * Cultural Activities – Countries and customs presentations, dances, culinary events, etc * Camps, out door activities, * Language Sessions (English, French, German, Spanish, etc) * Art (painting, modeling, handicrafts, etc) * Drama – Theatre plays * Sports & Dances * Presentation sessions on: Equal rights, Democracy, European Institutions, Etc
TECHNICAL ARRANGEMENTS
Accommodation
The first and the third week all volunteers are to be accommodated at “Nature INN” a guest house in Musetesti – a beautiful rural location, next to the mountains. The volunteers will share a room (2 persons/ room) with their own bed, bathroom, kitchen, living, dining hall and a wonderful natural surrounding.
The second and third week – in the hosting localities.
For the remaining 8 months the volunteers will be hosted in 4 rural communities from the east part of Gorj county: Bustuchin, Hurezani, Rosia de Amaradia and Prigoria either to host families or within the special arranged location by the City Hall.
Food
Buying and preparing the food is to be the sole responsibility of the volunteers. For preparing the food the volunteers will have free access to an equipped kitchen.
The hosting organization will provide each volunteer with a monthly food allowance from which they shall cover the alimentation costs. The allowance is enough for insuring a very good living standard (being much higher than the amount and average citizen from the region spends for food). However the allowance will not be enough for ensuring every day eating in a restaurant or bistro or leading a luxurious life.
Transport
The local transportation costs of the volunteers necessary for the activities implementation will be covered 100% by the association from the project budget.
The international transport of the volunteer from his/her home to the site of the project shall be covered 90% – two ways (Economy flight tickets and/or 2nd class train tickets).
The personal transport of the volunteers (local, national or international) will be not in the responsibility of the association.
Pocket money
Each volunteer is entitled to receive a 60 Euro monthly allowance – pocket money, which they can spent as they choose/want.

Selection criteria: gender and geographical balance
Education: education is a plus
