Proposed Activities

The children are aged between 3 and 7 years and a pedagogical team of three persons is there to accompany them throughout the mornings. It is important to us that there is at least one male team member. About 20 kids take part in the program. Opening hours are 8:30 am – 12:30 pm. There is additional team time for the staff members of about 2 hours in the afternoons. In the mornings the staff take a walk of approximately half an hour from Krems to the premises of the kindergarden which serves as emotional warm up and time to exchange personal impressions concerning the kids. We would appreciate it, if our volunteer would join the staff in these walks in the morning.
It is our goal to support the children in their activities and it is the role of the adults – according to Maria Montessori – to help the children to do things themselves. This would also be the main task of the volunteer. It is essential for the volunteer to be ready to spend his/her time in nature every day no matter what the weather is like, as well as a special interest in the surrounding nature as well as the nature of the individual development plan of children.

Typical Waldfexxx day:
Start at 7.30 in Stein: the team walks on a wonderful track through the vineyards with a beautiful view over Krems to Egelsee. The time walking up to the meeting point is used for a personal exchange (how are you on a personal level, how do you feel about the work with the kids...), for planning the day ahead (what part of the woods will we go to today – depending on the weather: there are special places, for example, for rainy days or for windy weather...) and for adjusting to a day of work with the kids!!

At 8:30 the kids are taken to the meeting point “football place” Egelsee - by their parents. It is already a tradition that the children will make use of the short period of waiting by playing running games with the adults. After that we start our day walking into the woods. The kids determine the pace and the activities that take place on the way. On our basis, where there also is our tipi, one of the adults and one of the children will make a fire. The children put away their rucksack, jackets and other personal belongings at the “wardrobe” – a special place designed for that. Those who want to can now unpack their snack and eat at the designated area.
At our basis the kids can again choose on their own what they want to keep busy with. On some days there are special offers such as cooking (the ingredients depend on the season), singing and making music. The adults, also our volunteer, contribute according to their special interests and abilities. Nevertheless, the focus lies on free play: in the “witches’ kitchen” children can “cook” with earth and other natural materials, and it is nice to relax on our “sofa” made out of brushwood. There is also a special place for making music, and children can build their own huts…
It depends on many other factors, such as the mood in the group and the weather, which other places in the wood we go to. Those places have special names such as the gold digging place where they love to dig, the water world, where there is a little creek, and the earth kingdom…A place of special interest are the hen and sheep which are located in the vicinity.
At 12:00 we go to the story telling place every day, where one of the adults will tell a story:
The children come up with words of their imagination and the adults will create a story out of these words – sometimes together with the kids. The kids love to do that and we have lots of fun together – the adults also.
After that we all walk back to the football field, after a day full of play in the beautiful natural surroundings, where there are lots of things to discover, where they had the chance to follow their natural desire for movement, play, social contact, communicative skills, and of course, having fun.
The parents pick up their children at 12:30pm.

Through a respectful and loving attitude the adults provide safety for the children and accompany them when they need help in solving conflicts. Thus they help them to acquire self-sufficiency and autonomy (according to Maria Montessori’s quote: “Help me do it myself”) and they will see to it, that only a few necessary rules will be obeyed (such as “we don’t hurt each other”, “we put material we used back in the right place”, and “we stay seated at the meals”).

We already had the good experience with our colleague from Canada who could not speak German at first that getting in contact with the children is not so much dependent on language as the children at this age react to non-verbal communication and charisma (a loving presence...)

Each day is different – each day is special – we react to the weather as well as to the individual needs of the children. Therefore this is only one example of many other possible ways to arrange the day.
After the children are picked up, the adults either walk back to Stein on foot (a time that will be used for reflection and is counted as working time) or there is a possibility for the volunteer to go back by car with one of the parents, if needed.

Apart from the work in the morning, the following activities take place:

•Team meetings: twice a week
•Participation at the information afternoons for parents and other interested people: three times a year
•Participation at the exchange with the parents: six times a year
•Participation at public beneficial events such as children’s theater play and the like, 1-2 times a year, for example, helping at the snack bar might be a task

Festivities with the parents in the afternoon:
Pumpkin soup festival – welcome event in the fall,
St. Martin’s Day,
St. Nikolas and
Christmas Celebration,
Carnival event
Spring Welcome,
Overnight in the Tipi for kids who will start school in the following year, and
Overnight in the Tipi for kids who have been in the Waldfexxx and get an opportunity to visit through this activity – both in June
End of the School Year Celebration.

Our offers/Learning opportunities:
Working in a team
Working together with children and youngsters
Get information about music, roleplay, theater, nature
Learn more about our pedagogical concept based on Maria Montessori

Role of EVS volunteers in our organisation:
Our volunteer should learn more about our pedagogical concept: a respectful attitude towards children, providing a safe environment for the children’s development of social competences, ie. Guidance in conflicts, drawing lines, where necessary, communicating with the children on eye-level, supporting them in learning the activities of everyday life: getting dressed, opening and closing the backpack, etc. All of these activities according to the motto of Maria Montessori: “Help me doing it myself”.
He/She should learn more about Austria and our society (tradition, customs)
Apart from our everyday way of life which might differ from the culture the participant comes from,
we celebrate the changes of the seasons and birthday parties, and the children will talk about the traditional festivities such as Christmas Celebrations, “Nikolo”, Easter Bunny, which is also taken into consideration by singing songs and offering poems that are part of these festivities.
He/She should be an active part of our community. The volunteer should support our children and youngsters by their daily work and he/she also be involved in the tasks of our teachers

Typical activities of the volunteer
Support our pedagogical team in their everyday work, accompanying the children to the designated areas in the woods, being there for them basically from an observant possition, assisting them in their learning experience when the need arrises: eg: help in dealing with the zippers if a child asks for it, going into contact when conflicts arrise and the children can’t solve them for themselves.
Planning and organizing different activities like birthday parties, Christmas or Easter parties, summer festivals,....
Our volunteer has also the opportunity to create own projects like inventing own stories for little children, cooking and singing – it depends on the interests of the volunteer.

The activities in the Waldfexxx Kindergarden depend highly on the weather.

Volunteer Profile
Our volunteer should be very interested in our pedagogical concept based on Maria Montessori. He/she should be very interested in working in a team.
Our volunteer should be interested in working together with little children. He/she should be creative (like playing music, singing, telling stories,...)

The volunteer shoud be open minded and act independently. Working experience with children would be great, but isn`t necessary.
We are open to work with different partners form all European Countries. Interested Volunteers will find the discription of our project in the public database. The youth information center of Lower Austria will support us by doing the paper work. The selection of the team will be a decision of the whole team.
