Project Environment
Radio FRO 105,0 MHz is a free, noncommercial radiostation, that works according to the open access concept. Radio FRO 105,0 MHz is located in Linz, Upper Austria and has been broadcasting since September 1998.
" Programme
Roughly 400 volunteer programming providers turn out over 100 radioshows in more than 15 languages. Areas of emphasis are informational and public service programs by NGOs and local initiatives, diverse language shows, a cultural and educational channel, broadcasts for young people as well as senior citizens and a variety of music programming.

" Projects
Radio FRO initiates participatory cultural and social projects on a local and international level. Different examples from 2009:
- Radiodialoge: transcultural broadcasting project
- Festival der Regionen: biennal art and culture festival in Upper Austria
- ARS Electronica: Festival for Art, Technology and Society
- Crossing Europe: international festival for independent movies/videos
- Appetite for Intervention: elections in Upper Austria

" Editorial department
FROzine - the acoustic infomagazine is dealing with current issues, that are not or insufficiently covered by mainstream media. It tries to inform and interact with programming providers of FRO. FROzine is part of the local alternative cultural scene. It reports on social topics, migration, culture and art as well as political issues and provides a platform for NGO's like ATTAC, Amnesty International etc.

" Journalistic training
The volenteer will take part in the annual Radio FRO - Lehrredaktion. The Radio FRO - Lehrredaktion is an intensive journalistic training. In several weekend modules, participants get in touch with theoretical and practical knowledge that is needed for editorial work in community media. The trainers are journalists with national and international expierences. Graduates have the opportunity to contribute to FROzine - the acoustic infomagazine and/or to specialized broadcasts dealing with cultural and educational topics. Furthermore, Radio FRO offers flexible workshop-modules for any person with interest in media law, studio-engineering, live radio broadcasting, journalistic styles and formats on air, cross media publishing and journalistic research.

Proposed Activities

The EVS volunteer works about 35 hours a week and the possible main working areas will be (in arrangement with the volunteer) as follows:
• Journalistic training and editorial work (FROzine)
The EVS volunteer will attend the Radio FRO Lehrredaktion in order to gain theoretical and practical journalistic knowledge as well as technical skills. After graduation the participant will be able to work in our editorial department and produce broadcasts in cooperation with our staff.
• Youth Project
The EVS volunteer will take part in an project dealing with youth, diversity and media. This project will support our work with the existing youth radio channel of Radio FRO and the EVS volunteer will get in touch with youth centres and educational organisations in Linz.
• Project work/project organisation
The EVS volunteer will get in touch with other on-going Radio FRO projects in the field of project organisation, project planning and project realisation.
• Day-to-day business
The EVS volunteer will support our team in some administration and planning issues. We provide a working enviroment where communication and socialising is part of our daily routine. Meaning that the EVS volunteer will be supported in his daily work.
• Cooperations with other cultural organisations
In our location are also other cultural organisations (Stadtwerkstatt Linz, servus.at) - a cooperation with these institutions and other organisations in Linz is also thinkable
• In general we can say that the working areas specified above are just possibilities that we can offer. As it is everytime and everywhere – it depends on the volunteers interest, commitment, diligance and individual preferences. We are a very open organisation, so it shouldn’t be a problem to get in contact with other people inside or outside our house.

Volunteer Profile
A volunteer working in a community radio like Radio FRO
- should be able to communicate openly with people from different cultural and
social backgrounds
- should also be able to adapt to new situations spontaneously
- be eager to work in a team and communicate with other team members on a daily
basis
- be strongly interested in noncommercial media and journalistic work in general
- experience in media work is not necessary, but would be appreciated
- (basic) knowledge in the German language is not explicit necessary but would be a
formidable advantage
- our house is wheelchair-accessible

The recruitment process will be as transparent as possible. Radio FRO is getting support for the selection by its coordinating organisation 4YOUgend.at in Linz. After
receiving the applications, Radio FRO will contact the applicants in a personal conversation (via e-mail, telephone, Skype etc.). The final selection will be a
decision of the Radio FRO team members, all applicants will be informed via mail.
The type of sending organisation could be a NGO, which is already cooperating with other organisations in the field of noncommercial community media. We are also open to all kinds of other organisations.

Risk prevention
The volunteer will be embedded in our team, we will take care and some team-members are available via phone day and night (for any problems, questions,...). The volunteer will work in a safe environment and usually never be alone in the office, team members will be present and give clear directions in case of emergency. In the first days there will be general information about safety issues (e.g. emergency telephone codes, address table, ...)
Linz in general is a safe city, furthermore our office is situated in a central area of the city and it is easily possible to call help via phone or directly in house – a facility manager and technician, who are in charge of all safety issues.
