The Daily Care Centre is working in the cosy co-ed Elementary School, which is located on the southern hillside in the Bielany suburb at the outskirts of Krakow. Bielany is a small suburb of Krakow, and our Day-care Centre is the only place there that offers an opportunity for meaningful and creative for many children, who otherwise might get involved in potentially harmful activities. Our day- care tutors are qualified specialists , whose aim is to provide children with quality care, joyful and educational environment, basic ethical foundations. Number of children varies from 25 to just several, they are 6 to 12 years old . Same of them with fewer opportunities facing social and economical obstacles. Our project ”Get to know Europe!” aims at rising European awareness in our small community. Every year of this project is devoted to the culture of one country ( the volunteer’s country) which will be introduced to children.
Tasks We want to introduce children into society by teaching them how to cooperate and contribute. We give and require respect, promote self-discipline, create and support friendly and joyful atmosphere. The project assumes that means of regular Daycare Centre activities that are clearly focused on various aspects of volunteer’s country culture we are able to bring elements of European heritage into our community life. Under those circumstances a volunteer willing to cooperate with us would be a godsend. The volunteer will be invited to share their national culture and identity. In co-operation with the volunteer we will penetrate different aspects of his culture to know famous work of art, writing, drama, pictures, songs etc. At the end of the project the volunteer supported by the day-care staff and children will prepare the presentation of the results of their research concerning the volunteer’s country culture. During the project the volunteer is welcomed to come up with their own concepts, activities which we will be willing to discuss and possibly introduce. We would like the volunteer to show and share with our children their national culture, customs, traditions, songs, typical games; this could take form of daily block of activities prepared by the volunteer, for example they may be asked to play with children, run simple drawing activities, organize discussions, presentations (interpreter is available). We want to use drama techniques employing simplified works of literature. Project work with children (eg. group wall displays focused on volunteer country geography, history, culture, etc.) is also planned. The volunteer could also help us and the children prepare typical decorations (at Christmas, Easter, etc.).Such activities organized within our project with a help of a volunteer would definitely be much more authentic. The volunteer will work in cooperation with a daycare tutor and will never be expected to work without their support. They will be invited to cooperate during the daycare program and occasionally, within regular day care and/or school events, however we will not ask for more than 6 hours of their work per day. Their duties will involve creative activities with children, as well as general supervision of children’s own play. Criteria Our organisation is open to working with any partner. We don’t have any expectations about the type of sending organisation we want to cooperate with. We want to host the open-minded, highly-motivated and with sense of humour and a positive attitude volunteer. He/she must like to work with children. No previous knowledge or experience is required and thus, basic following of instructions is all that is needed.
