The work of the Center addresses itself to children and young people with the following goals: promotion of personal development, leisure activities, assistance and support with disadvantage and discrimination, orientation for a Christian life, organisation without conditions for members, promotion for harmonious living together between different nationalities, denominations and social layers.
Leipzig has a living youth culture. Thousands of students from all over the world make life here colorful. Therefore Leipzig is a good place to live and to work.The quality of life is distinguished: open-minded people, pulsating scenes in different quarters, extensive parks and green areas, rivers and lakes for recreation an for sports, various congregations with different theological imput.
At the same time however, there is high unemployment in the city and the region, paired with social problems. Close to the YMCA Leipzig, in the city-district Schönefeld this problems are noticeable. Between the high unemployment and the high rate of youth crime there are a lot of kids and young people with migration background.
The volunteer will stay in a apartement-sharing-community together with two volunteers from Germany.
Tasks
Tasks: The volunteer will be involved in the school social work and school club at a secondary school in Leipzig with a high portion of pupils with migration backgrounds. He will take part in a group work with children, young people and adults and co-operate with a holiday travel tour. During the service, the volunteer will also work in a youth cafe and other youth projects . The volunteer will help with consultation and briefings, co-designing of projects with a intercultural character. The volunteer also has the chance to develop his own project during the year. Together with our guest we wish to develop projects with the aim of teaching the children the unique characteristics of the volunteer's culture. The volunteer can take part in a language course at the beginning of the stay.
Criteria
Volunteers should be interested in our social and cultural work and have the desire to work independently. Some practical experience in the work with children and youths and a Christian lifestyle are welcome. We are delighted when volunteers come to us with their own ideas or even their own projects.We would like to see open-mindedness for all religions and social backgrounds, self-confidence and reliability. Basic German knowledge is welcome. Especially male applicants from Ukraine are asked to apply.
